This Belgian-made pistol based on patents issued to J. Warnant in 1904 and 1905 and patents issued to N. Pieper in 1906 and 1907 was first marketed in 1907. Some of the same patents were used by
Oesterreicheische Waffenfabrik Gesellschaft (OWG) in the design of the Steyr pistol, hence the similarity. Pieper called this style of pistol the Demontant model, as it is disassembled by turning the lever down and lifting the top off as a unit. Other models are distinguished by a screw in front on which the barrel hinges and is tipped up.
